Mai 1979 kamen auf dem Chicagoer Flughafen O'Hare alle 271 Insassen des American Airlines-Fluges 191 ums Leben, weil kurz nach dem Start das linke Triebwerk abriss und den Flügel zerstörte. Zwei weitere Menschen starben am Boden in einer Wohnwagensiedlung. Der Flugzeugcrash in Chicago ist der bislang verheerendste der US-Geschichte. Aber die Tragödie war weitaus schlimmer als zuerst angenommen. Mit dem Flug 191 starben bis 1979 insgesamt 622 Menschen bei DC--10 Flügen. Ein trauriger Rekord.
